Thank you to everyone who came to Show Day!

It was so lovely to see familiar faces and lots of new ones ☺️ We hope you all enjoyed it as so much effort goes in to putting it on. We had Pete Farnsworth kindly open this year’s show with a fantastic speech 👏🏻.

The tortoise racing was a huge hit drawing in a big crowd, and Esio was the triumphant winner 🐢. The exhibit hall was packed with fantastic entries from all ages, and the auction was fun as always! We hope you enjoyed all the fantastic stalls, the beautiful gardens of Green End and of course the weather!

Thank you to the committee members and many volunteers (who are back working at Green end and the hall this morning!) for all their valued hard work, Show Day wouldn’t be possible with out you all. As always a huge thank you to Adrienne and Roy (and Harvey 🐶) for being such great hosts and allowing us to use their beautiful gardens.

April 2019

Lots of families joined us for an Easter Activity afternoon. Everyone was kept busy making chocolate animals, nests and creating spring like pictures on the ‘sticking and colouring ‘ table. Children came in lovely Easter hats they had made,  it was hard to choose winners!

Celebrating the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th Wedding Anniversary

A sell out evening to celebrate the Platinum wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Phillip.

Lovely homemade pies and puddings were followed by ‘wedding cake’ made by our Ruth, an excellent toast given by Pete Farnsworth and a glass of bubbly.  We then had a good old sing song with Steve and Alan.

A jolly good evening.

Red Dirt Skinners

An evening spent with the above at the Hall. Very talented, young musicians. Lovely singing and very skilled instrument playing. Sarah plays a soprano saxophone; she’s only tiny but she really made a wonderful sound with it!

A full a house again for quiz night at the hall . The old grey matter was definitely stretched! Some of us partook of a light beverage or two and all enjoyed a nice pasty and a nice cup of tea.

Antiques Evening with Michael Bowman

As usual lots of interesting items were brought in for valuation, with much light hearted banter between Michael and the audience!

May 2015

Highweek ladies and their handiwork!

A felt making course, of four afternoons, was led by a professional felt maker Claire Packer of Yelverton.

The course  was only offered to a few Halls as part of a Villages in Action promotion, so we were lucky to have this opportunity. The aim was to bring people together, learn a new skill and have a lovely sociable time (it’s safe to say all three were achieved!)

The outcome of these afternoons now hangs proudly in the Village Hall for all to see.

Thank you VIA for giving us this opportunity to come together and create something rather lovely for the hall.

April 2015

Joe Blamey Memorial Quiz Night

Joe blamey quiz night

Our quizzes are getting popular and this evening was no exception (it’s probably the lure of the pasty supper!).
Quiz masters, Mike Rooney and Fred Bowden, did a Stirling job of not only entertaining us but providing a fun quiz as well.

11 teams of 4 put their grey matter to the test but all did well with not too much difference in the scores. The winners each received a small trophy and their names will be put on the Joe Blamey wall plaque in the hall. Well worth coming for for that honor alone!

March 2015

Roberts and Lakeman

Back in March we had the pleasure of being entertained by Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman. The hall was packed. Lovely songs, some written by themselves, some were old regional songs. Even though Kathryn was suffering with a heavy cold, her voice was beautifully clear and melodic and together with Sean’s excellent backing it was a really good evening. They are really worth going to see.

February 2015

An evening with Maggy Duffy with sausage and mash supper

A full hall enjoyed a lovely supper followed by song and funny anecdotes from Maggy Duffy, a local talented entertainer.

January 2015

Quiz Night

A Good turnout for first quiz night of the year set by new quiz masters, Simon and Hayden. It was challenging but made fun with their witty banter!

The quizzes seem to be getting popular, so hopefully we’ll look to putting a few more on, especially as we have more volunteers to set them. If anyone thinks they’d like to set a quiz, please contact us.

December 2014

Christmas in a Devon Village Hall 1914

Performed by choral group ‘Pieces of Eight’.

Based on a Jan Stewer poem the performance told the story of village lamplighter, Jim Tooze, whose family and other villagers are affected by the start of the Great War.

This was a sell out concert . The audience enjoyed the story through lovely singing from the choir and the story telling by Derek Roberts. It certainly pulled at the heart strings.  Audience participated in singing along to the Christmas carols. This was followed by ploughmans supper, mulled wine  and  tea. A lovely evening.  All for £4.  Bargain.
